Hysteria voted best bassline of all time

Muse’s Hysteria has been voted as the track which features the best bassline of all time. In a new poll conducted by Musicradar, the bassline from the Devon trio’s 2003 hit single came out on top, with Rush’s YYZ in second place.

Queen held the next two places in the top ten, with Another One Bites the Dust and Under Pressure at Number Three and Four respectively. Pink Floyd were at Number Five with Money, while Metallica, Michael Jackson, Yes, The Who and Tool made up the rest of the Top 10.

Muse aiming to release their new album in October 2012

Muse are aiming to release their sixth studio album in October next year, according to their manager. Anthony Addis, who looks after the Devon trio, has said that the band are in the studio now and have “lots of material” written for the album. Speaking to Billboard.biz, Addis said of the band’s progress in recording the follow-up to The Resistance:

“They’ve now gone into the recording studio. The plan is to do it all in London. Hopefully, the album might come out October next year. They’ve written a lot of material already but you don’t know how it’s going to gel between them all. They write constantly. They write on the road, so before or after a gig they’ll write nearly every night. It’s a serious process, but you don’t know how it’s going to turn out until you start practising it together, because everybody’s done it individually.”

Muse most recently headlined this summer’s Reading And Leeds Festivals, playing a set that included the entirety of their second album Origin of Symmetry.

Muse’s music gift for university

The rock band Muse have donated thousands of pounds to buy equipment for the next generation of musicians. The trio, singer and guitarist Matt Bellamy, bass player Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard, have given £15,000 to buy state-of-the-art equipment for undergraduates at Plymouth University in their home county of Devon.

The modular analogue synthesiser, two liquid channel pre-amps and a set of specialist orchestral and instrumental microphones will be used by the university’s School of Humanities and Performing Arts.

Professor David Coslett, dean of the Faculty of Arts, said:

“This is a wonderfully generous gesture from Muse and will provide exciting opportunities for our students to experience the kind of industry-standard equipment very few universities have access to.”

The equipment will enable students to gain hands-on experience and develop the types of recording skills used in the production of television, film, live performances and video games.

Muse, who met at school in Teignmouth, Devon, were made honorary doctors of arts by the university in 2008. They have also agreed that a portion of the donation should fund student prizes over the course of the next three years. A spokesman for the band said:

“We’re delighted to provide this equipment and hope it will inspire students to go on and create great music for years to come.”
